When Good Vessels Go Bad

John 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

For years I read the NIV and Luke 5:37 referred to “wineskins” not bottles. Bottles seem, to me, to be made more of glass not vessels made of clay. Why would a clay vessel burst by having ‘new wine’ poured into it? I don’t ‘get that’.

These have cracks in them, but is it due to ‘new wine’ that the Bible speaks of being poured into them? God only knows. But the point is, is that God’s Holy Spirit can’t be poured into a container that has contained ‘a sin nature’ since birth, I reckon.

Just as those of honor can choose to do dishonorable things, can the dishonorable choose to do honorable things. Possible or not? With God all things are possible!

God can prune the living to make them produce more fruit. What He cuts off or out of our lives is for a good reason. May we ‘be blessed in understanding’ what that is!

Better to be a branch that He prunes than one He cuts off for the burn heap. But those are the branches that choose not to receive His Life and abide in Him. Life can be used for Good or for evil and when for ‘evil’ it’s taking away “life” from producing more of the Good.

So let us ‘knot’ be led into temptation but ‘walk in the Spirit’ and not fulfill the lusts of the flesh!

Re-route! Re-route the flow of life around that which constricts us from freely receiving God’s pure Word, and Spiritual water and bread!

  1. I enjoyed your thoughts on wine and the bottles that contain the new wine. I also liked your thoughts on being pruned and the knot needing sealing. Thank you for your comments on my recent post. We certainly must walk in I Corinthians 13 in what ever service we do for our Lord. Your other scriptures were edifying and appreciated.

    1. Thanks Hazel. Glad you appreciated! Yes, God’s Charity is a Life Line for sure!
I had a sociology Prof. named Hazel. She was quite the ‘abstract theorist’ teacher ~ I liked her!
Some of my ‘abstract learning’ I discover fits well in the ‘spiritual realm’. But, just as anything that can be used for God’s Good, it too can be used for ‘evils and sin’ [unbeknown by us unless God opens our eyes to the truth] if we’re not following the right Light – which is vital! The world likes to puff us up or thumb us down, but the LORD’s Charity gives us Life and Edifies us in the spirit – as you know. Resulting in a “peace” the world cannot give.
Walking in the Spirit keeps us from being led astray by the dictatorial flesh, which we’re to reckon ‘dead’. But ‘dead man walking’ is not unusual to see!
Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Living that reality requires us to be totally plugged into Christ, His Truth. And that’s our work: Believe upon the One God sent!
“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
